Volkswagen Polo: A Driver's Car of Hatchbak

B-segment has always been regarded as a ‘red-sea market’, especially in India. Even though facing those rivals coming from Asia, such as Maruti Suzuki Swift and Hyundai i10, the Volkswagen Polo, which is having celebrated its 10th anniversary, is still quite competitive. It is said that Volkswagen has announced that the Polo will be a petrol-only offering by April 2020, so this generation might be the last chance for those who want to buy a diesel Polo.

On-road price

Volkswagen Polo price starts at ₹ 5.87 Lakhs and goes up to ₹ 9.89 Lakhs. The price of Petrol variant for Polo ranges between ₹ 5.87 Lakhs - ₹ 9.76 Lakhs and the price of Diesel variant for Polo ranges between ₹ 7.39 Lakhs - ₹ 9.89 Lakhs.

Mileage

As per ARAI, the Volkswagen Polo mileage is 17.21 kmpl to 20.48 kmpl. The Automatic Petrol variant for 1197 cc engine has a mileage of 17.21 kmpl. The Manual Petrol variant for 999 cc engine has a mileage of 18.78 kmpl.

Exterior

The Polo is known for its classical design, and even the facelift version is no different. It’s not that outdated, but the design of the exterior won't surprise you. The top variant will have a little different from the others, At the front, it has a black front skirt and honeycomb mesh pattern for the grille, and coming to the tail, it will a new black spoiler, reworked rear bumper and a pair of special square taillights.

Interior

The classical design continues inside the cabin as well. Or you can say that it is a bit boring and humble, unlike those fancy Korean cars. Of course, you get a lot of hard plastics on the inside, but the overall interior design is just fine. The steering wheel has been given a flat bottom for a sportier drive. The dual-tone dashboard is also premium looking along with the brand new center console. If you pay more money for the top variant, you will get the classier checkered pattern which is inspired from Golf GTI. Also, it has a lot of useful features, including rain-sensing wipers, a 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system supported with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, cruise control, automatic climate control and rear parking sensors. LED elements have also been added in the tail lamps along with some minor revisions to the rear bumper. Besides, the cabin is ergonomic and everything is within reach which reflects Volkswagen‘s extensive experience of making cars. NVH levels are also perfect in its level, and noise from outside is under good control.

Dimension and Space

Volkswagen Polo dimensions 3971 mm in length, 1682 mm in width and 1469 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2469 mm. Comparing to the front seats, the rear seats are a bit cramped. And, headroom, legroom is shortly supplied. But at least the seat is quite comfortable. The boot space of the Volkswagen Polo is 280 litres, which is a bit smaller than Suzuki Swift, but it’s enough for daily use.

Specification and Feature

In terms of powertrain, VW Polo is equipped with a 75PS, 1.0-litre petrol engine or a 90PS, 1.5-litre diesel engine. Both engines are matched with a 5-speed manual gearbox. And the top variant, the Polo GT is offered with more powerful engine options: a 1.2-litre TSI petrol and 1.5-litre TDI diesel engine which have a power output of 105PS and 110PS, respectively. This makes the Polo GT one of the most powerful hatchbacks in India. The 1.2-litre TSI engine is coupled with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox while the 1.5-litre TDI is matched with a 5-speed manual gearbox.

Test Drive and Performance

German cars are always famous for great dynamic performance which is regarded as an important advantage when competing with its Asian rivals. The VW polo is also regarded as a driver’s car in this segment. So, we strongly suggest the top variant GT Polo because this wonderful powertrain is definitely worth the extra pay. The 1.2-litre four-cylinder, direct-injection turbocharged petrol engine outputs 103bhp and 175Nm. The DSG transmission has lightning-quick shifts, and it’s so clever that you can barely notice the gearbox working. The steering is light and comfortable at low-speeds, but it will become heavier brilliantly when coming to the highspeed. It is smooth and accurate, and offers good feedback of road. Stiff suspensions and low ground clearance will give you strong support in high-speed corners, but it will quite struggle when facing those rough roads in India.
