Pros And Cons of Jeep Compass: Hardcore SUV with 4X4

Pros And Cons of Jeep Compass: Hardcore SUV with 4X4

Overall

Jeep Compass can probably counted as the most hardcore model in C-segment SUV. But when like BMW X1, Merc-GLA, Hyundai Tucson and other Entry-level luxury SUVs put more focused on the luxurious interior, fancy configuration and ride quality, Jeep is still pursuing on the pure off-road performance.

Therefore, in the India market that has complex road situations, excellent handling and the off-road performance have become one of the Jeep Compass attractive selling points and extremely enhanced its practicality. So, we will introduce the worth of buying or not for this unpopular choice of C-segment from the terms of the pros and cons in this review.

Pros

Price

Jeep Compass price starts at ₹ 15.65 Lakhs and goes up to ₹ 27.6 Lakhs. The Jeep Compass’s range includes Sport, Longitude, Limited and Limited Plus. The Longitude and Limited versions further get an optional pack. The diesel engine is offered for all variants, but the petrol engine isn’t available in the Longitude variant. Also, while the base-spec petrol Compass is MT only, the top two variants of Compass petrol only get an automatic gearbox. And, if you want AWD system, you only get that choice in the Limited, Limited (O) and Limited Plus variants with the diesel engine.

The diesel models seem to be the major choice of the buyers, they are priced at Rs 21.96 lakhs for the Longitude variant and Rs 24.99 lakhs for the top-end Limited Plus. So, it is Rs 2 or 3 lakhs cheaper than the Jeep Trailhawk and will compete with the much more affordable XUV500 W11 (O) AT and the Hyundai Tucson 4WD diesel-automatic which is expensive by almost 2 lakhs. Another rival for the Compass diesel-automatic will be the Tata Harrier diesel-automatic. So, we can find that the prices of the Compass are quite affordable and competitive when comparing to its rivals.

Exterior

Jeep Compass is still held the classic design for the exterior. At the front part, Jeep Compass is applying as before the design language of flagship Grand Cherokee and adopted the Jeep's classic and iconic mid-mesh grille. Plus, for the side of the car, the designer has used the 18-inch chrome-black wheels, dual-tone roof and roof tails to increase the sense of sporty and vitality. There are two recognizable LED tail lamps at the rear which impressive the most.

For overall, Jeep Compass has inherited the tough line and muscular design style and embody the true Jeep DNA in a lot of details. This kind of unique design makes Jeep Compass stand out from the segment.

Ride Quality

In addition, one of the advantages of JEEP has always been its off-road performance. Jeep Compass has equipped a 4x4 All-Wheel-Drive System and its abundant power will be transmitted to every wheel through this system. And meanwhile, Jeep has also provided different driving modes, such as Mud, Snow, Sand and etcetera to help in better response in various complex road situations and environment. Meantime, Jeep has an excellent performance on the road.

In this case, Jeep Compass's engine and transmission are more prefered to create a fluent but not aggressive driving style. So, no matter is at the city's traffic jams or high-speed cruise, the ride quality of the Jeep Compass is relatively comfortable. However, the transmission response is not that sensitive since there are no shift paddlers. But it can better absorb the bumps on the road and gives you sufficient support when hanging around the city.

Engine & Transmission

In terms of powertrain, Jeep Compass is equipped with both petrol and diesel transmission. The petrol variants are powered by a 1.4L Turbo Multiair engine, which comes with a maximum power of 159bhp and peak torque of 250Nm. The engine can be mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or a 7-speed DCT automatic gearbox. In terms of the diesel variants, they get a 2.0L MultiJet Turbo engine which outputs a max power 170bhp at 3750rpm and peak torque of 350Nm between 1750-2500rpm. The engine is linked to a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, while the top-end variant also comes with the 4X4 drive system.

Cons

Interior

The interior of the Jeep Compass looks outmoded just like the other Jeep models. In spite of the adoption of dual-tone-finish, the overall style is still duller. Furthermore, the various buttons will feel clumsy when using them, especially the buttons on the multi-function steering wheel, which feels very ordinary and affects the whole car's luxury sense and grade. Besides, in terms of the center console, Jeep Compass is equipped with a 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen infotainment system that comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The system will occur stutter haply when using it, and so interior performance is quite unsatisfactory compare to its appearance and power.

Mileage

The diesel variants of Jeep Compass deliver a mileage of 17.10kmpl (ARAI Specified), while the 4X4 variant returns 16.30kmpl (ARAI Specified). Although the official mileage is not that bad, but the actual mileage has a big difference with the official mileage, especially the petrol version models while in actual use.

This has shown either in our road test or the users' feedbacks. In several users' feedbacks, the true mileage is even lower than 10 km/l, and this must have a certain disparity compared with the competition products.

Conclusion

In summary, we found that Jeep Compass is a distinctive personality product, and this will absolutely make it a minority choice in the Indian market. If you have a persistent pursuing about the manipulation and dynamic performance, and love off-roads, then the Jeep Compass is suitable for you. But if you bought SUV for having a spacious, more comfortable sitting position, meanwhile, the luxury interior with rich configuration and function, and unwilling to accept the higher fuel efficiency, then you should choose for another mainstream model.
