Can you use some data to describe how welcome is the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R? There are more than 2.2 million of these vehicles on the road and this perfectly tells us its popularity on the street. There are so many reasons that make this old and new Wagon R so popular, such as you can easily get in and get out because of its big dimension for a hatchback, it gets a spacious cabin as well as a lot of practical interiors. And with the launch of the new Wagon R, Suzuki has decided to keep enhancing its advantages and correct its disadvantages. The new Wagon R is longer, wider and higher than the old generation. What’s more, because Suzuki has introduced the 40 per cent high strength steel, this fresh hatchback is about 65kg lighter than before and this also makes the body 1.5 times stronger, which helps the new Wagon R can comply all the upcoming crash test norms. Wagon R has been one of the ideal options for consumers who are looking for a practical and functional hatchback for over two decades. However, with the rapid changes of the technologies, trend and consumers’ preference, can Suzuki let its useful Wagon R keep the pace of the world? Then we need to take the Wagon R 2019 on the road to find out if it really as good as we expected and if Suzuki has made the new Wagon R more perfect than ever.
Engine and Transmission
The new Wagon R provides a 1.0-litre 3-cylinder K10B and a 1.2-litre 4-cylinder K12M petrol engine and both are available with manual as well as AMT gearbox. The 1.0L version can deliver 68hp @ 5500 rpm and 90 Nm @ 3500 rpm while the 1.2L one has 83hp @ 6000 rpm and 113 Nm @ 4200 rpm.
Steering and Handling
The flexible steering of the new Wagon R gives me a great comfort even I am trapped in terrible traffic situations in the city but it’s still a little bit vague. The car offers a brilliant suspension system, McPherson Strut type suspension at the front and the torsion beam at the back and both of them are supported with coil spring leaded suspension system. In addition, the 14-inch tyres and a turning radius of 4.7 meters help me handle well in Indian city roads. Nevertheless, the new stiffer chassis, wider tyres and the relatively softer suspension setup don’t make me feel better than the predecessor on the road. Especially the suspension is softer, which can give you a more comfortable driving experience on the rough road conditions while such setup is not suitable for sharp turns.
The authoritative fuel efficiency from ARAI is about 20.52 to 32.52 kmpl, which is a good data for a car like this. The 1-litre petrol engine is 20.52 kmpl while the 1.2-litre one is 21.79 and the CNG variant is 32.52 kmpl.

The new appearance of the fresh Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 2019 gets an angular and sturdy body design with a tallboy style. Thanks to the wider body, Suzuki has given the new Wagon R a flatter face, which means the driver now can get a larger view than before. And the standard chrome grille makes the car look good. The rear part of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R 2019 also gets a new design, a new tailgate combined with the fresh taillights, which look unique. Besides, the big and thick C-pillars structure makes this vehicle safer as well as more beautiful.
The headlamps are bigger than the predecessor and are equipped with regular multi-reflector units, which is merit compared with the Tata Tiago because it doesn't get this but projector units in the top model. However, the new ZXi, the top version, doesn’t provide dual-barrel projector headlamps and they were equipped on the older VXi variant.

Moreover, the new Wagon R now offers the top-model ZXi version with much more features than the one. The seven-inch touchscreen infotainment system is an all-new unit and it supports Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay.
It is as easy as the old generation to get in and get out of the new Wagon R because the doors are big enough and the height of the seats is very ideal. The front seats are comfortable and supportive and the space and comfort at the back are amazingly good, which means when you are sitting in the back, you can enjoy a lot of legroom and bigger vision. Even three adults sitting at the rear seats doesn't seem crowded because of its wider dimension.

In many directions, the new Maruti Suzuki Wagon R is a great hatchback. The driving experience is fine for many people and the price is friendly for normal people. Its authoritative mileage and dimension are economical and big enough for those who have three to four families. What’s more, the new exteriors and interiors are well designed and they are really convenient and practical. Its new feature list is more bountiful than the older generation. One pitiful thing is the safety rating test in 2016 by Global NCAP.
