Maruti Suzuki Baleno, What You Get Is More than What You Pay

Baleno has made its global debut in India and now is the second vehicle which is sold in the Maruti’s Nexa dealership network after the S-Cross. And the vehicle has four variants for consumers, they are Sigma, Delta, Zeta and Alpha. Baleno gets some updates with new sets of modifications and fresh interiors in the cabin. Besides, in terms of safety, Suzuki has done something great, adding ABS, EBD and dual front airbags as standard in all versions. One of the biggest conveniences for consumers to own a Baleno is the competitive access to Suzuki’s excellent after sales and service network. The Baleno is an upgrade from the Swift in many ways, especially about what it offers. If you still want to have a Suzuki vehicle but also are looking for something more than the Maruti Suzuki Swift, then the Baleno is an ideal choice for you now. The new Baleno looks very nice in the image and now we meet the car in the flesh to find out more about it.

Driving Performance

Engine and Transmission

The new Baleno officially offers two engine types, a 1.3-litre diesel engine which only provides a manual gearbox and the 1.2-litre petrol version including manual as well as automatic (CVT) transmissions.

Steering and Handling

During the road test, I can feel the suspension of the Baleno is turned to be a city hatchback and it can deal with the rough road very well. The high-set chassis makes it no so flexible but you can enjoy a bigger cockpit room instead. It gets excellent handling thanks to its perfect balance even at high speed on the highway and the steering is light at low speed, also not heavy when you drive fast. It won’t tremble while driving at three-digit speed, even more than 120 kmph. The performance is as good as its sibling, Swift and Dzire, so a lot of people always make comparisons among them and this is very common.

The fuel efficiency of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno ranges from 19.56 kmpl to 27.39 kmpl, according to the test result from ARAI. The automatic (CVT) petrol variant with a 1197cc engine has a mileage of 19.56 kmpl while the petrol variant with a manual transmission and 1197cc engine is 21.96 kmpl. And the diesel version only offers a manual gearbox, with fuel consumption of 27.39 kmpl.

The highlight of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno is its sporty appearance. The new Baleno hatchback now gets a fresh bumper to make its air ducts sportier on each side and the fog lamps now are set higher and closer to the headlights. The new grille is more three-dimensional as well as attractive and Suzuki has made some changes to make the front wider. Its angular headlamps are good-looking and suitable for the body. To the side, the profile doesn’t look as sharp as the Hyundai i20, but a little bit roundish. The old alloy wheel design of the old generation doesn’t look good and fortunately, Suzuki has changed it with the facelift. There are no huge differences at the rear.

The Baleno Delta and Baleno Zeta offer LED projectors with light guides while the top model, Baleno Alpha, gets them with DRLS. Just the tail lamps with LEDs don't look so modern.

Now the new Baleno gets fresh two-tone 185/65 R15 (Steel) or 195/55 R16 (Alloy) for all versions.

The updated Baleno interior comes with a new generation Smartplay Studio connected infotainment system, which supports Android Auto as well as Apple CarPlay and Indian people like to listen to music when they are travelling, this is nice and considerate. Suzuki provides a nice 17.78cm touchscreen infotainment system for the Baleno and it is easy to control as well so users can have a good entertainment experience. You can listen to your favourite songs, play the most popular radio channels, and listen to the latest weather and traffic updates. You also can read the latest news and locate restaurants even snack stores wherever you are.

The room that Baleno gives to driver and passengers is not so big, but it can satisfy you basic activity. However, Baleno gets a very large 339L boot compared with other hatchbacks and I think it’s the boot that takes our space away. If you are not a picky person, the space of the car is enough.

There is no doubt that Baleno has become another Suzuki’s success car with excellent ride quality as well as fantastic official mileage data, which make me pretty impressive. In addition, the price is friendly and affordable for many normal people. Fresh exterior and interior feels good and sporty, especially the 339L boot is very useful. It’s worth mentioning that Baleno has received a 4-star safety rating from Euro NCAP.
